LAWSUIT FILED TO PROTECT TULARE AIRPORT

The City of Tulare, California issued a permit for the Knight Transportation Company to construct a trucking terminal 1300 feet from the end of runway 31.

The plan calls for above ground fuel storage tanks, building structures, concentrations of people and extensive lighting. After local airport users were unable to convince the city council members that the project would result in a safety hazard for aircraft taking off or landing, they contacted the California Pilots Association for legal help. On June 14, volunteer lawyers responded by filing a petition for writ of mandamus asking the court to require the city to revoke the permit. The petition alleges that the city ignored state safety guidelines and violated the California Aeronautics Act so as to create a safety hazard for persons using the airport and those on the ground.
