CALIFORNIA PILOTS ASSOCIATION
The California Pilots Association is a non-profit public benefit California Corporation formed in 1949. The mission of our statewide volunteer organization is to promote and preserve the state’s general aviation airports. We have long recognized that the state’s general aviation airports are more than irreplaceable transportation infrastructure assets. They also serve as disaster recovery centers - most recently demonstrated during the annual wild fires across the state, and in the past during the major earthquakes. Airports are also beneficial as regional economic engines, just as the highway system serving the community is. Past studies have confirmed the financial benefits of general aviation airports to their communities. You can help to get the message out by joining us. After all, if you not you, who will protect your airport?

Excellent 1950's Aviation Video
You will LOVE this Eastern Airlines Silver Falcons production that includes Arthur Godfrey and Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker reminiscing about flying. It's the first time I've ever heard Capt. Rickenbacker speak. It is a combination of an old commercial for Eastern Airlines, as well as military aviation, and aviation in general. Please plan accordingly because it is well worth the 48 minutes of your time to watch this historical video.

California lawmakers to Capitol Hill: GA serves America
by AOPA ePublishing staff
Onerous security regulations, insufficient funding, and encroachment: The challenges to general aviation loom large, and three California legislators are asking their colleagues to call on those on Capitol Hill to protect this vital part of the economy and transportation infrastructure.

Speaking Up for General Aviation
In a column printed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, talk show host — and pilot — Neal Boortz opines about the anti-GA crowd flying off the handle after the Austin crash. He tries to set things straight: “Let me start with the idiot talking heads I heard on the cable news channels in the hours after the attack. (It was an attack, not an accident.) Of course we got the usual trip about flight plans. “The pilot didn’t file a flight plan!” one broadcaster wailed. I heard another news reader say that “since it was a single-engine airplane, a flight plan wasn’t required.” Can those of us involved in general aviation ask just a small favor here? If you’re reporting the news, stick to reporting the news. Don’t start guessing about things you know nothing about. The number of engines on an airplane has nothing to do with it. A 747 can fly around the state without a flight plan. Read the entire column.

AOPA: Why The User Fees Battle Isn't Over
New aviation user fees aren't in the Obama administration's budget, but they still may be packaged elsewhere, AOPA's Lorraine Howerton told AVweb Thursday. Howerton is AOPA's vice president of legislative affairs, and while she said AOPA's efforts had created some breathing room, the country's fiscal woes may become a serious influence on future funding decisions. As the budget deficit soars, legislators are under increasing pressure to shrink federal spending wherever possible. Currently, the general fund for the FAA is down 30 percent, said Howerton. She added that the decrease may translate into a greater draw on the Aviation Trust Fund, and that draw may in turn drive legislators to seek alternate forms of funding -- potentially, user fees. There are other concerns.

Oceano Airport Under Attack by Land Developer
Developer Jeff Edwards has scheduled a March 17 meeting to discuss his unsolicited plan to turn Oceano County Airport, near San Luis Obispo, Calif., into a non-airport property. Meanwhile, Bill Robeson, a city planner who works with the city's Airport Land Use Commission, told SanLuisObispo.com that when it comes to closing the airport, "none of the hearing bodies for the county are considering it." But Edwards, a private land planner, sees "enormous potential" for the nearly beachfront property that he says could translate into "significant cash flow to the county if they were to close the airport and lease it for development." He has advertised his upcoming meeting through a press release, has invited representatives from San Luis Obispo County and candidates running for local positions, and said "the public is encouraged to attend." Oceano operates a 2325-by-50 foot paved runway and is home to 13 aircraft (10 singles and three ultralights). The facility serves transient pilots and its land-use plan estimates 12,500 operations per year.

General Aviation Benefits Outweigh Possible Hazards
Blaming general aviation for a pilot flying a private plane into an IRS building in Texas misses the point, according to columnist Jeff Schweitzer. Stack could have used another weapon to attack the IRS, and security measures cannot prevent all attacks. "While the misuse of an airplane will always remain a possibility, the extraordinary benefits of general aviation vastly outweigh any potential harm," writes Schweitzer. The Huffington Post (2/19)

Watsonville defends airport safety decision in court
By DONNA JONES - Santa Cruz SentinelSAN JOSE - A day after a small plane crashed into an East Palo Alto neighborhood, Watsonville officials were in an appeals court defending a decision to eliminate safety zones around Watsonville Municipal Airport. Editor's Note: Just as we have been previously reporting the City of Watsonville is attempting to overturn the decision against it because they were trying to ignore potential noise and safety issues at the airport that their Plan 2030 would cause.
